And in the subsequent scenes, the England stars ran to their better-halves and were seen embracing them with smooches.

England will play Senegal in the Round of 16 – and should they win, they will face either Argentina or France in the quarterfinals.

After the match, manager Gareth Southgate declared his side reached the World Cup knock-out stages in better shape than four years ago, when the tournament was in Russia.

Man of the match Marcus Rashford inspired England to a 3-0 victory – with a wonderful brace.

The Manchester United attacker opened the scoring with a wicked free-kick and then doubled his tally with a neat individual goal.

Foden scored from close range in between, capitalising on a great cross from Harry Kane.

And Southgate has stated his squad had more self-belief than the semi-finalists who got to the round of 16 in Russia, where they beat Colombia on penalties.

He said after the match: “’I think there is a different mentality. More belief. In Russia, we were just thinking, “Can we win a knockout game?” Now there is more confidence and more experience of knockout matches.

‘We are pleased the first objective is achieved. The spirit of the team is good we have got most of the team on the pitch which is fabulous for the dynamic – and no yellow cards which is good.’

“We had complete control of the game in the first half but didn’t create enough clear chances. We were a little bit out of balance and we thought we could reverse Marcus and Phil’s sides. Players make those decisions work.”
