Micah Richards explains Phil Foden’s best Man City position after Chelsea victory

Phil Foden was on the scoresheet as Man City defeated Chelsea 4-0 in the FA Cup third round on Sunday.

Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards believes that Phil Foden’s best position is in midfield, with the England international having scored in the FA Cup win over Chelsea.

Pep Guardiola’s side cruised into the fourth round of the competition with a comfortable 4-0 victory over the London club on Sunday evening. The Blues will now face off against either Oxford or Arsenal in the next round, with the tie set to be played at the end of this month.

Riyad Mahrez (two), Julian Alvarez and Foden were all on the scoresheet for the home side. Meanwhile, Graham Potter’s side failed to threaten City’s backline at any point in the clash and have now lost to the Blues twice in the space of three days.

Foden started in midfield alongside Rodri and Bernardo Silva on Sunday, with the 22-year-old delivering one of his best performances in recent weeks. The Englishman registered his 10th goal of the campaign against Potter’s men – and ex-City man Richards believe he performs better in a central role.

“I love seeing Phil Foden in the Man City midfield, I know it’s difficult with De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva normally playing them roles but he offers so much more in terms of getting in on the ball, how intelligent he is to create space for others, his first touch is just (perfect),” he said at half-time of the clash on BBC Sport.

The 22-year-old, who was impressive for England at the World Cup in Qatar, has actually played the majority of his matches for City as a midfielder, but Guardiola has typically utilised him as a left-winger so far this term.
