BREAKING: Manchester City win the Premier League title

by duceditor

Manchester City have been crowned champions for the third season in-a-row after Arsenal lost to Nottingham Forest on Saturday evening.

Arsenal have pushed Pep Guardiola’s side for much of the season but have run out of steam in recent weeks as the champions have just got better and better.

Manchester City already knew that a win over Chelsea on Sunday would have captured their fifth title in six years but their rival’s defeat to Forest means Frank Lampard’s side will be performing a guard of honor ahead of kick off at the Etihad Stadium.

Taiwo Awoniyi continued his impressive recent form, notching a goal in the 19th minute and despite dominating possession throughout Mikel Arteta’s team didn’t really threaten to score.

As well as crowning the champions, Forest’s win also secured that they will remain in the Premier League for a second season.

City have matched local rivals Manchester United as only the second team to win the league in three successive years in the Premier League era.

United have managed it twice, including one run that started in 1999 and City can also match their rivals’ achievements from that season.

If they can beat United in the FA Cup final and Inter Milan in the Champions League final in the next three weeks then they’ll be only the second English team in history to win the Treble.

At one point Arsenal were eight points clear of City but the two sides were yet to meet in the league at the time, which would have been a worry for the then league leaders.

Guardiola’s side showed their experience in title races by winning both those games and only dropping two points in the past 14 games.

That run started after losing to Tottenham Hotspur, on the day Harry Kane broke the club’s all time top scorer record, and would have been a double edged result for the Gunners’ north London rivals.

City’s only dropped points in that run were at the City Ground away to Forest and in the end that’s been the location for the end of the title race too.

Guardiola can now focus his attention on their two finals and rest players against Chelsea on Sunday, Brighton in midweek and Brentford next weekend.
